Standard moving company coverage for cargo loss or damage for your goods is "60 cents per pound per article". This is the level of coverage that most moving companies are required by tariff law to provide at no additional charge. As a consumer, you need to understand THIS IS NOT FULL VALUE COVERAGE. "60 cents per pound per article" means a 20 pound brick times 60 cents equals $12.00, maximum carrier liability. A 20 pound computer times 60 cents equals the same $12.00, maximum carrier liability. This coverage does not at all take into account the value of an item, only its weight. Moving companies have available additional levels of valuation coverage, often with varying deductibles, but all for an additional cost. Similar to other types of insurance coverage, the better levels of coverage will cost a higher premium. All of these various levels of valuation should be disclosed in advance of your move. If not you should directly ask your moving company what valuation options are available. 3/20/06
